Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our shop and how private imports work. If yours is not listed, email us at daniel@vinshorizon.com; we respond the same day.
Orders
Why is the price displayed not the amount charged at the time of ordering?
Because the purchase is done in two stages. In Quebec, the SAQ holds the exclusive right to import alcoholic beverages: we do not sell alcohol; we sell a selection and delivery service. When ordering, you pay the agency service fees. The cost of the product is paid to the SAQ at the time of pickup. The price displayed on the product page is the total of both, taxes included.
How do I order?
Browse our selection, add the desired case(s) to your cart, choose your SAQ branch for pickup, and pay the service fees. We submit the order, the SAQ authorizes it, and you are notified as soon as the wine has arrived.
Can I change or cancel my order?
Yes, as long as the order has not been submitted to the SAQ. Email us as soon as possible. Once the file has been opened with the SAQ, changes become much more difficult and sometimes impossible.
What are the lead times?
A wine already in our warehouse ships quickly. A wine being brought in from the estate requires several weeks for transport and customs clearance. The actual lead time is indicated on each product page, and we will notify you if it changes.
The SAQ and pickup
Do you offer home delivery?
No. Pickup at an SAQ branch is the only delivery method possible for private imports. This is not a limitation of our service; it is a legal requirement.
At which branch can I pick up my order?
At the branch of your choice, among those authorized to handle private imports. You select it at the time of ordering. Pickup is free of charge.
Can someone else pick up my order?
Yes, provided that the person is of legal drinking age and presents a piece of ID along with the order confirmation. The SAQ applies its own age verification rules, without exception.
Does this site comply with regulations?
Yes. We operate within the framework of private orders governed by the SAQ and Quebec law. The agency selects and transports, but the SAQ remains the only entity authorized to sell alcohol.
Products
Why do you sell by the case and not by the bottle?
These wines do not go through SAQ shelves: they are ordered from the estate for you, and the estate ships them by the full case. Depending on the wine, a case contains 1, 3, 6, or 12 bottles. The format is indicated on each product page, along with the price per bottle for your reference.
Are some of your wines sold in-store?
Yes. We represent our producers to the SAQ, so a portion of our portfolio is listed in branches and can be purchased by the bottle, without orders or lead times. These wines have an SAQ code which we indicate on their product page.
How are the wines stored and transported?
In temperature-controlled containers, then in a temperature-controlled warehouse until delivery to the branch. We choose our carriers based on this criteria, not price: a poorly transported wine is a lost wine, and our reputation goes with it.
What if a product is out of stock?
Email us. Depending on the wine, we can tell you the date of the next shipment or suggest a comparable bottle in the same spirit. We never replace a wine with another without your approval.
Returns
What if a bottle is corked or broken?
Return it to your SAQ branch. We will process an exchange, or a refund if an exchange is not possible. The bottle must be at least three-quarters full and have been purchased within the last twelve months. Keep your receipt; it is required.
Can I return a wine I don't like?
No. A product in good condition cannot be exchanged or refunded. This is the SAQ rule and it applies to all private imports. If you are hesitant about a wine, email us before ordering: we would rather guide you than disappoint you.
For professionals
I am a restaurateur or retailer, how can I work with you?
Email us with the name of your establishment, your city, and the type of wine list you are building. We will offer a targeted tasting rather than a generic presentation. Training for your floor staff is part of the offer.
Do you provide technical sheets?
Yes, complete and accurate the first time: appellation, grape varieties and percentages, vinification, aging, tasting notes, food pairings, serving temperature, format, code, and real-time availability.
Producers
I am a producer looking for an agency in Canada.
Email us with the name of your estate, your region, your annual volumes, and the markets where you are already present. We will get back to you with an honest assessment of your potential in Canada, even when the answer is no.
