I · The story

The toga and the Brunello

The story begins in 1989, when the father of the Angel family, then a young lawyer in Rome, fell in love with Montalcino, in the heart of Tuscany. The estate takes its name from the “toga”, the gown worn by lawyers and judges. The first vintage dates from 1990; since then, the family has kept bottles of every vintage in its cellar.

La Togata now belongs to the second generation: the three sisters Stephania, Vanessa and Azzurra Angel. Stephania, a sommelier, oversees production and the management of the estate; Vanessa represents the wines at the major European trade fairs; Azzurra designs several of the labels. Jeanneth Angel, drawing on long experience in international wine marketing, supports the house.

Under one roof, the house produces several labels. La Togata, the blue label, embodies a classic Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. Carillon, whose name evokes a music box, offers a more modern, fresher and fruitier take on the same appellations.

“I love working for a family business that is dedicated to quality.”

II · The terroirs

Sant'Angelo in Colle

The estate lies in Sant'Angelo in Colle, a medieval hilltop village 8 km from Montalcino, within the Val d'Orcia natural park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The cellar is dug into the hill, which keeps its humidity and temperature naturally balanced.

The vineyards are spread across the hills of Montalcino at varying altitudes, around 250 metres on average, and catch the sun until it sets. The tufaceous clay soils are very rich in coarse elements. The vines from which the Brunello grapes are selected are more than 23 years old.

III · The craft

The Sangiovese tradition

Every step is personally overseen by the family, from hand pruning to grape selection and temperature-controlled fermentation. For the La Togata Brunello, the bunches are thinned twice, then the grapes are sorted again in the winery before being vinified in the traditional way.

The Brunello ages for 36 months in Slavonian oak casks, then a further 12 months in bottle. The Rosso di Montalcino, from the same vineyards, spends 12 months in wood before a few months of bottle ageing. The Carillon Brunello, for its part, is aged in 40-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks.
