I · The story

The wind that gives its name

A south-easterly wind, born of Adriatic weather systems and heralded by the Trieste bora, blows for several days along the shores of Lake Garda. It is called the Vinessa. It shapes the vines to the point of giving them its name, and the wines born of them are called children of the wind.

The vines grow at the foot of Monte Baldo, in San Zeno di Montagna, on land long devoted to grazing, once nicknamed "the shepherds' mountain". Human intervention there is limited to preserving a nature that has remained untouched.

II · The terroirs

Between lake and mountain

Facing south-east between 720 and 800 metres above sea level, the vines receive strong sunshine and wide temperature swings. Cold currents from Monte Baldo and milder ones from Lake Garda allow late harvests.

The clay and silt soils, rich in limestone rocks and dolomite, give the wines minerality and acidity. The mountain climate ripens the grapes slowly and keeps acidity high in the berries, a guarantee of elegance and structure.

III · The craft

Heroic viticulture

Slope, altitude, stones and rock banks make mechanisation difficult: this is what is called heroic viticulture. The vines are disease-resistant varieties, known as PIWI, born of a cross between European and Asian vines, which naturally resist fungal diseases and need fewer treatments.

The vineyard is farmed organically: cattle manure from neighbouring farms, worm humus, cover crops between the rows, low yields per vine. Each bunch is sorted by hand and carried in shallow crates, and the plots are harvested one by one, according to their ripeness.

  • Organic farmingcertified, according to the Divento and Fruscìo 2023 technical sheets
